Police arraign Lagos politician, phone repairer on affray

The Ogun State Police Command has arraigned a Lagos politician, Odukunle Kuti, and a phone repairer, Rasheed Ameed, before a Magistrate’s Court sitting at Owode Egba, Ogun State.

While 44-year-old Kuti was charged with two counts of affray and causing breach of public peace, Ameed (27), was arraigned on affray.
PUNCH Metro had reported that Ameed (Sunkanmi), in April 2018 on Jimoh Akinsanya Street, made a snide remark at Kuti for allegedly beating up his wife.

Our correspondent reported that the politician confronted the phone repairer for meddling in his family affair.

The confrontation reportedly resulted in a fight between the duo as they tore each other’s clothes into shreds.

It was gathered that the politician later invited some soldiers, accusing the phone repairer of robbery.

When his case was dismissed by the boss of the soldiers, one Captain Okoye, Kuti reported to the police at the Warewa division.

About a month after the fight, Kuti was reported to have asked the police to charge the phone repairer to court, accusing him of the theft of his phone and money.

The police spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi, however, said police investigation revealed that the incident was an affray, adding that the duo would be arraigned for the offence.

They were charged before a magistrate, Mrs. O.O. Ogundele, on Thursday.

The charges read,

“That you, Rasheed Ameed of 8, Jimoh Akinsanya Street, and you, Kuti Odukunle Oluwaseun, of No 4 of the same address in Arepo, on Apil 14, 2018, around 8.30pm on Jimoh Akinsanya Street, Arepo, Ogun State, in the Obafemi Owode Magisterial District, did unlawfully take part in a fight in a public place, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 83 of the Criminal Code, Law of Ogun State Nigeria 2006.

“That you, Kuti Odukunle, of the above mentioned address, on the same date, time and place, in the aforementioned magisterial district, did conduct yourself in a manner likely to cause breach of the peace by chasing and beating your wife, Abosede Kuti, on Jimoh Akinsanya Street, Arepo, Ogun State, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 249(d) of the Criminal Code, Law of Ogun State Nigeria, 2006.”

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the offences and elected summary trial.

The magistrate admitted the two men to bail.

While Ameed was granted bail in the sum of N20,000 with one surety in like sum, Kuti was granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum, who should present evidence of tax payment to the government.

The case was adjourned till June 13, 2018.
