Globacom Set To Improve Internet Speed With 12 Terabytes Submarine Cable
Call it a prayer answered or anything else but it seems Glo is about to improve their data services and if this works out, I believe a lot of us would stop complaining about their internet speed.
On a stable 3G connection, presently the fastest speed I've ever gotten on my Glo SIM is 400kb/s. Imagine having to download a 2GB file on that speed.
I bet you can relate to that feeling
Glo has unveiled a a multi-billion naira optic fiber submarine cable project. Tagged Glo 2, the roadmap for this project was unveiled at a contract-signing ceremony between Globacom, and Huawei at Eko Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Tuesday.
According to Globacom’s Regional Director, Technical, Mr. Sanjib Roy:
“The new submarine cable will be approximately 850 kilometres long and will be integrated to Globacom’s existing terrestrial Backbone Network to provide additional service redundancy, especially in Abuja and other parts of the country.
It will have the capacity of transferring data at 12 Terabytes per second and will provide ultra-high speed connection to every community to improve data coverage and support the Enterprise market growth in this part of Nigeria.
According to the Managing Director of Huawei Nigeria, Mr Li Beifang :
“Huawei is proud to partner with Globacom to build a revolutionary submarine cable using innovative and leading technology. We believe the cable would bring a new era of digitalization to Nigerian economy”.
Glo 2 will complement the Glo 1 international submarine cable built by Globacom in 2010. It is currently the only international submarine cable in Nigeria managed end to end, from Lagos to London, by one Company and provides enough bandwidth for the West African sub-region.
