Vine v2 Has Been Postponed Indefinitely

It looks as though Vine v2 may never see the light of day. Because Vine co-founder Dom Hofmann has placed the project on hold for “an indefinite amount of time”. And, as usual with this kind of thing, it all comes down to money. Or a lack of it.

The Short, Looping History of Vine

In 2012 Twitter acquired Vine before it has even launched. Millions of people started using it, creating short looping videos. Some people, including Logan Paul and Jake Paul, even launched their careers through Vine. And then it all came crashing down.

Despite building a userbase of hundreds of millions of people, in 2016, Twitter killed Vine. Nothing has really taken its place since, which is why, in 2017, Hofmann declared he was working on Vine v2 as a “personal project,” “personally funded”.

V2 Faces Financial and Legal Hurdles

Unfortunately, the decision to go it alone looks to have been a mistake. Hofmann has taken the “very difficult decision of postponing the V2 project for an indefinite amount of time”. That’s obviously vague, but suggests we shouldn’t hold our collective breath.

In a post on the v2 community forums, Hofmann explains that “financial and legal hurdles” have forced him to place v2 on hold. He further states that “legal fees have been overwhelming,” which suggests Twitter isn’t too keen on some aspects of Vine v2.

In conclusion, Hofmann suggests that “in order to work, the V2 project needs to operate as a company with sizable external funding, probably from investors”. So unless someone with deep pockets comes forward, the chances of v2 launching are slim to none.

From Vine to Innerspace and HQ Trivia

It should be noted that Hofmann has other things going on, including running a company called Innerspace. Meanwhile, Hofmann’s co-founders Colin Kroll and Rus Yusupov have gone onto create the wildly successful HQ Trivia. Neither of which are as beloved as Vine.
